Radiation Oncology Upgrade – Frequently Asked Questions

Important Notice: Radiation Oncology Planned Transition

Colorado State University’s Flint Animal Cancer Center is upgrading our radiation therapy machine to provide the most advanced and effective treatment for our patients. This new machine will offer cutting-edge technology and will ensure pets get the care they need to fight cancer.

During this upgrade, we will not be able to treat patients for about three months. We will, however, continue to provide consultation services, see existing patients, and help transition care to other radiation facilities in our area if needed.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this important investment in the future of veterinary cancer care. As we undergo this replacement, here are answers to your most frequently asked questions:

Why is the radiation therapy machine being replaced?

Our current machine has provided almost 20 years of reliable service, but technology in veterinary radiation oncology continues to advance rapidly. The new unit will deliver more precise treatments, shorter treatment sessions, advanced care options, and improved comfort and safety for your pet.

When will the radiation department be closed?

The radiation department will not be closed; however, we will stop treating patients on December 24, 2025. We anticipate that we will be back up and running in April 2026. During this period, we will not be able to perform radiation treatments on-site, but we are here to offer radiation therapy consultations to help pet families decide the next best course of action and advanced imaging to understand your pet’s diagnosis and help plan radiation treatments at other locations.

Where can I get radiation treatment during the transition?

We have partnered with local radiation oncology specialty clinics that are all open to treating patients and will work closely with our team as needed to ensure your pets are cared for. We have streamlined communication with each clinic to ensure that records, CT scans, and other information are available to their teams. Locations include:

Will other oncology services at CSU’s veterinary hospital still be available?

Yes. Medical oncology, surgical oncology, clinical trials, diagnostic imaging, and patient follow-up care will continue as normal. The radiation oncology department will remain open and available to help you with information, consultations, existing patient rechecks, and imaging requests. We will only be unable to provide radiation treatment during this time.

What improvements will the new machine offer?

The new system will feature:

  • Greater precision for targeting tumors while sparing healthy tissue
  • Shorter anesthesia and treatment times
  • Enhanced imaging and treatment planning capabilities
  • Improved comfort and safety for all patients

These upgrades reflect our ongoing commitment to offering the highest standard of veterinary cancer care.
