Canine Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)

Study Name:

Pilot Clinical Trial of Trametinib Treatment in Dogs with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)

Purpose of the study:

  • To evaluate the benefit of treatment with trametinib in dogs with AML

Primary Eligibility Criteria:

  • Diagnosis of AML confirmed by Clinical Hematopathology Lab based on review of blood tests
  • Sufficient presence of cancer cells in blood to allow monitoring
  • Baseline evaluation completed, including physical exam, CBC, serum chemistry profile, and urinalysis
  • Owner and veterinarian willingness to comply with study visits, medication administration, and monitoring
  • Dogs cannot be significantly affected by their disease
  • Must have one-week washout from L-asparaginase and 2 weeks from chemotherapy

Study Protocol:

  • Trametinib will be given by mouth once daily by owners; prednisone will also be given
  • Follow-up visits with your local oncologist are required approximately 1 week and 2 weeks after starting treatment, every 2 weeks through Week 12, and every 4 weeks thereafter for physical exam and collection of blood and urine
  • Dogs will be removed from the study if their disease progresses or if they have unacceptable side effects from trametinib

Owner Responsibilities:

  • Administer trametinib and prednisone to your dog
  • Attend follow-up visits as required by the study
  • Complete an online survey at the time of each study visit
  • Keep a diary of any side effects your pet experiences or any additional medications given
  • Costs of initial diagnostic testing to confirm the diagnosis of AML, routine veterinary care not specifically covered by the study, supportive care medications and treatments, emergency visits and hospitalization. Treatment of medical conditions unrelated to the study, and costs incurred after pet is removed from the study

Financial Incentives:

  • Once enrolled in the study, the costs of complete blood count (CBC). serum chemistry profile, urinalysis, and flow cytometry performed at each study visit as well as costs of trametinib and prednisone
