Patient Disease:
Canine Mast Cell Tumor
Study Name:
Cryotherapy for Canine Mast Cell Tumors
Purpose of the study:
- To evaluate the mast cell tumor (MCT) tissue changes associated with a new cryotherapy probe. This information will be used to determine if this less expensive carbon dioxide-based probe can be used to treat other dogs having MCTs that are not geographically near veterinary specialty centers, to improve the accessibility of veterinary care.
Primary Eligibility Criteria:
- Confirmed diagnosis of MCT with a single tumor that is amenable to wide surgical excision
- Tumors must be 2-5 cm in one axis and 1-3 cm in the other axis
- Adequate organ function to safely undergo anesthesia
- 72-hour washout from corticosteroids; no other prior treatment for MCT allowed
- No systemic signs related to MCT
- Pets must come to CSU for all visits related to the clinical trial
Study Protocol:
- Once enrolled, dogs will be anesthetized and will receive cryotherapy to the mast cell tumor; they will be hospitalized overnight to monitor for any side effects of the procedure
- Dogs will return 14 to 21 days later for wide surgical excision of the MCT
- Study is complete after surgery day
Owner Responsibilities:
- Costs of diagnostics to diagnose the mast cell tumor and any diagnostics recommended by your oncology clinician
- Make and keep all appointments as required by the clinical trial protocol
Financial Incentives:
- Once enrolled, the study will cover the costs related to both study visits including anesthesia, cryotherapy, overnight hospitalization, and costs of surgery to remove the tumor with analysis by histopathology
- Up to $1000 is available to cover costs of treatment of side effects related to study procedures
