I have always had a great love and respect for animals. I grew up in rural New Zealand around many animals, large and small, that were an integral part of life. In my first year of high-school, I was fortunate to be taken under the wing of my local veterinarian who supported and inspired me to follow this path.  When I first started my veterinary training, I envisioned myself becoming a large animal clinician, but as soon as I was introduced to small animal surgery I was hooked. The immediate and dramatic effects surgeons could have on a patient’s quality of life fascinated me, and from then on, I knew that was what I wanted to do.

Shortly after completing my veterinary degree, I moved to South Australia where I worked as a small animal veterinarian and became more and more interested in treating animals with cancer. I then traveled to Queensland and started a surgical internship, followed by a surgical residency. My surgical training was largely oncology-focused and I was privileged to spend time at CSU’s Flint Animal Cancer Center during this program. I was immediately impressed by the patient care and dedication to educate and inspire students here.

Following completion of my residency I worked as a surgical specialist at Sydney’s Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH) for two years but never lost sight of my desire to return to Colorado and further my surgical oncology training.

I am so thankful to be back at CSU. Being in such a supportive learning environment is an incredible opportunity. I am passionate about scientific communication, and teaching energizes me almost as much as being in an operating theatre. I strongly believe one of our most important roles as veterinarians is to empower others with the knowledge to make truly informed decisions for animals in need. I never want to stop learning, and every day I gain new knowledge from my clients, colleagues, students and patients alike. It is just as important to be teachable as it is to teach and remember everyone you meet knows something you don’t, so always be ready to listen.

I am particularly interested in intrathoracic and head and neck surgery. The complex anatomy and physiology of these areas of the body makes oncologic surgery challenging but also demands that as surgeons we remain meticulous and gentle in our approaches. These surgeries exemplify the importance of respecting tissues and being as skilled with our decision making as much as with our hands.

Outside of work, I love to spend time with my little dog named Hippo, my cat Doris and my wife, Lauren. I enjoy riding motorcycles, spending time outdoors, cinema, and all forms of art. I am excited to explore Colorado further and enjoy the friendly laid-back atmosphere of Fort Collins.
