Treating Tumoral Hypoxia via Ultrasound-Guided Oxygen Release for Improving Radiation Therapy

Patient Disease:

Canine Soft Tissue Sarcoma

Study Name:

Treating Tumoral Hypoxia via Ultrasound-Guided Oxygen Release for Improving Radiation Therapy

Purpose of the study:

  • To evaluate tumor control in dogs treated with 5 fractions of stereotactic radiation therapy with or without the addition of oxygenated microbubbles

Primary Eligibility Criteria:

  • Dogs with a confirmed diagnosis of soft tissue sarcoma of any stage or grade in accessible location

  • No evidence of metastatic disease (spread) and skin over tumor must be intact (no ulceration)

  • No prior radiation therapy to tumor; two week washout from chemotherapy required

  • Weight at least 3.5 kg (7.7 lb)

  • No pre-existing immune-mediated disease or diabetes mellitus

  • Good function of liver and kidneys, acceptable blood cell counts, and free of severe underlying disease

Study Protocol:

  • Once enrolled, dogs will have a CT scan of the tumor location for radiation planning

  • All dogs will receive 5 daily (Monday through Friday) treatments with stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT)

  • Rechecks required 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months after radiation

  • Tumor biopsies and blood collection for study purposes are done prior to starting treatment, at the time of the final radiation treatment, and 3 weeks after radiation

Owner Responsibilities:

  • Follow appointment schedule required by study protocol

  • Contribute $1000 towards the cost of radiation therapy

Financial Incentives:

  • Study pays for all costs associated with trial, including exam fees, the CT for radiation planning, the cost of SRT, and costs related to tumor biopsies done as part of the study except for $1000, which will be the owner’s responsibility
