Canine Primary Lung Tumor
Study Name:
Use of a novel navigation system to obtain transbronchial aspirates of peripheral lung tumors in canine model
Purpose of the study:
- To assess the ability to accurately visualize and obtain aspirates of lung tumors using a novel access/visualization and needle aspiration device in dogs with suspected primary lung tumors
Primary Eligibility Criteria:
- Dogs with a suspected diagnosis of a primary lung tumor that is accessible for aspirate using ultrasound-guidance; if the tumor is not accessible, owners must be planning to pursue surgery to remove the tumor following study completion.
- Tumor must be determined to be reachable by the novel device being tested via bronchoscopy
- Weight ≥7 kg (15 lb)
- Certain breeds with broad, short skulls (Boston terrier, pug, Boxer, bulldog, etc.) are not eligible
- No prior treatment for the lung tumor is allowed, and dogs with spread of their cancer are not eligible
- Pets must come to CSU for all visits related to the clinical trial
Study Protocol:
- At the first study visit, dogs will be put under anesthesia for a CT scan of the skull and thorax. Immediately following the CT, an ultrasound-guided aspirate of the tumor will be performed to obtain a diagnosis.
- Once the CT images have been reviewed, we will be able to determine definitively if dogs is eligible to continue on the study. If so, dogs will return for the second visit within 3 weeks of visit 1 (length of time depends on scheduling conflicts with the study team).
- At the second visit, a breath sample will be collected using a special mask, and then dog swill be anesthetized for the bronchoscopy procedure. Aspirates of the tumor will be obtained with the novel device and the results will be compared to those from the ultrasound-guided aspirates. The 1st 3 dogs enrolled into the study will be kept in the hospital overnight for monitoring.
Owner Responsibilities:
- You are responsible for the initial testing to determine study eligibility and any other tests recommended by your pet’s oncologist
- You are expected to make and keep all appointments associated with the study
Financial Incentives:
- Once enrolled, all costs associated with this study will be covered
- If the dog completes the second study visit, owners will receive a $1000 credit to their pet’s VTH account to put towards further treatment
