Surgical Oncology Fellow

Dr. Chris ThomsonEven as a kid, my whole family knew I was destined to be a veterinarian. I was born and raised in South Dakota and was always the one bringing creatures from outside in and begging my mom to let me keep them. Most of my earliest jobs were working with animals; at a veterinary hospital, university, and even at the zoo. I’ve always been drawn to surgery, ever since my first job as a veterinary assistant. Surgery was a calculated and often transformative intervention for patients during profound and challenging moments of their lives.

I attended veterinary school at the University of Minnesota, spending as much time as allowed in the operating room. It was during this time that I got my first experience with surgical oncology, specifically with dogs that were diagnosed with brain tumors. I was very fortunate to work with the Canine Brain Tumors Clinical Trials Program, providing the highest standard of care for patients with a potential life-limiting diagnosis. We could offer cutting edge therapy to dogs intended to preserve quality of life and improve long-term survival rates, while at the same time, learn how these treatments may improve human patients with the same disease.

I spent a year as a rotating intern at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before heading back to the University of Minnesota for my surgery residency. It was during my residency that I elected to dedicate my career to surgery for patients with cancer. I have since spent my time learning the best ways to maximize patient outcome while simultaneously minimizing the pain and suffering associated with surgery. Through minimally-invasive surgery (laparoscopy, thoracoscopy) and interventional radiology, we are now able to provide the same, if not better patient outcomes for patients diagnosed with cancer.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and our pets, a Weimaraner named Nala and two cats, Biscuit and Brioche. We enjoy all aspects of outdoor activities, including running, biking, and hiking. I try to spend most weekends out on the various hiking trails that only beautiful Colorado has to offer!
